Here's an early version of a book cover concept I did a while back. I'm posting it because I just rediscovered it and think it's kinda cute, even if the direction changed a bit.

Lordy! What a week!! I know, I know...it's not quite over yet...but for me, IT IS. I am done! The "universe" tested me in a big way over the past many days but I did manage to meet my deadlines (with happy clients!!) while dealing with all the other hoopla.
So, for that I say "hallelujah" and let me get the hell out of town! I'm taking off to the desert tomorrow morning. It'll be really nice for a change of scenery.

Here's a couple recent goodies commissioned by the fine folks at Astro Girl! Magazine.

Typically,I don't like throwing copyright smack dab in the center of my art BUT, I figured it would make it less appealing to theft that way. Not that I think there's a big crime ring focusing on astrological symbols or anything. It was only after consulting my charts and the recent Harvest Moon, I figured...better safe than sorry!! Just kidding, if I really looked at my charts I wouldn't know what the "stars" I was looking at anyway. Heck, all I know about a Harvest Moon is that it looks ginormous and brilliant and almost fake (like, the backdrop painting of a school play). And, "Harvest Moon" is the title of my all time favorite Neil Young song. If you don't know it, check it out.

Even while admitting my lack of astro-knowledge I don't mean to imply that I wouldn't or don't read my horoscope...because I do! Not every day...sometimes it's merely the perfect tool for procrastinating a few minutes longer. Anyway, I take it all in stride. Since my birthday falls on the CUSP of Libra/ Scorpio...I read both 'scopes and pick the one I like best. ;)

I know even less about Tarot cards but find them fascinating if not a little frightening. I'd love to learn more about 'em because I think it'd be fun to draw a whole set someday.

Wardrobe Mishaps!

Here are some silly little illos I did for the upcoming issue of Yikes! Magazine. Have you experienced anything like this? I certainly have!
That said, I choose NOT to share with you the couple wardrobe mishaps I've had in my early life. Let's just say this though..both incidents that come to mind were pretty em-bare-ASS-ing.

Jalapeño del Sol

Ah yes, here's another 10k I won't be participating in...other than, designing the t-shirt logo. For one, the trail run is in San Antonio. TEXAS. I don't mess with Texas. Secondly, I hate, hate, hate running. I'm a terrible runner. I might sprint for half a block with my dog but that's the extent of it for me. I might run away from a bad guy too...but let's face it, I'd probably have to resort to eye-gouging. Walking, hiking, swimming...those are more my speed. Even when I was in grade school and they made us run around the track...I abhorred it. It just hurts too much. Would love to change my attitude about it someday because I know it's a great way to drop some LBS and tone. But, blech...I just hate it.
Anyway...trying to follow the theme of the drawing here...which also includes a Jalapeño! I looooooove japapeño.... in fact, I made some awesome spicy salsa the other night. Hot! Spicy! Pure Goodness. And now the (jalapeño) seed has been planted: I will be dreaming about carne asada tacos from a local taco stand (or truck)...sprinkled with cilantro, onion and spicy salsa that makes my mouth on fire. And I will be thinking about this until it happens. Later, today. YES.

Los Chuys are running

Here's a couple images I snagged from the internet of the "Los Chupacabras De La Noche" race held in San Antonio, Texas a couple weekends ago. I don't know the runners personally but I did the Chuy (pronounced Chewie!) drawing. It's very cool to see people wearing a t-shirt with my drawing on it. I hear the t-shirts turned out really good this year too! My samples should be arriving any day. Woo Hoo!

The Imposter's Daughter

How'd that happen? Well...

In May 2008, I got an e-mail from a writer living in New York who wanted ME to color her graphic novel. To which I replied "Hells YES!". I did so because first, it sounded so cool and well, quite frankly I wanted to be very busy with a "perfect summer gig!". In reality, it took much, much longer than the summer though. The assignment pretty much took the entire year. Most of the time, I was happy to color away, reading Laurie's book as the pages came in. During the course of this last year, Laurie and I traded daily e-mails often times discussing men- "He said what?!" or the election -Yay! Obama! or any number of random thoughts. It was fun. We met a couple times for coffee, here in Los Angeles, when she'd flown in to interview some über famous celeb. It was a strange and awesome experience getting to know someone like that. There were times I felt challenged by this assignment too. There was so much to do that there was very little time for working on my own art or for making any extra money either. But new pages of the book would arrive with e-mails coinciding and I'd get another glimpse at the story unfolding before me. I could relate to so much she shared about herself in both her book and correspondence...even though our lives are vastly different. And let's face it, because the woman is a very good interviewer, I pretty much told her my whole story too. I think I felt comfortable blabbing about myself to her because I was witnessing how she was willing to put herself out there to tell her own story. I have a great amount of respect for that.

So please check out this book! Check out her book readings if you're in either NYC, Los Angeles, San Fran or Portland in August. It's an honest, entertaining, humorous, and compelling read. You might find a bit of yourself in there too. And, if I don't say so myself....it's color ain't too shabby. ;)

Liberty Porter

Hi! So, Liberty Porter, First Daughter came out this week. I illustrated the cover and interiors. I must say, it was pretty cool to go into Barnes and Noble and see the book on the shelf...not far away from a few of the other covers I've done over the past couple years. Wow, it's like I'm a true blue illustrator or something! Wooo Hoo!
I bought two of the three copies (one for me and the other for my parents) but still, had to leave the third copy there so my Mom could go into that store and see it for herself. Look Ma, it's really there on the shelf!

Ok, first, I'm not even sure "Les Belles de la Mer" makes sense in French...but it sounds good to me! Je parle francais comme une vache espagnole.

Regardless of my terrible French...here is the first of many Mermaid drawings I've wanted to illustrate for some time now. I have this pile of sketches from last year that I haven't had time to get to. Now, I do. Unless some freelance work comes in. In which case, I will put the sketch pile aside and happily work on whatever that fabulous assignment is. PLUS, I'll be thrilled that I won't have to sell off my furniture in a yard sale next month!! Yipes. Freelance can be wildly exciting and scary sometimes.

Cutey Critters

So, this past year I haven't really had time to do any personal work..which is fine and all because drawing my own little critters and stuff doesn't generally get the bills paid. Plus, I'm not about to complain about actual work that comes my way! No way, Jose!
However, it's a dream of mine to get some of my personal work to parlay into income at some point in time. If that doesn't pan out...it's still, always, good to draw for the fun of it. Right?! Keeps the creative juices flowin'!

I started this series of spring themed drawings (aka personal work) last year and have finally had a little down time to draw a couple more! Yay! Just in time for summer!!

No, no, really, stokked for all you lovebirds out there. It's wonderful. However, this year, I'm all about heading over to See's candies to load up on some...Okay, NO. I think I'll go ahead and resist that urge. Instead, I'll share a glass of wine, probably with several of my most bitchen, single girlfriends. This is a fun little assignment I was did back at the end of last summer.
I was commissioned by my old friend, Brent Piaskoski to draw the cast of his sweet and funny tween comedy show up in Canada. Brent and his wife/writing partner, Barb, gave it as a wrap gift to the cast. This sort of thing makes me a little uneasy and wonder "Really? You think they'll like that?" mixed with "WOW! Cool beans! I feel so honored." "The Latest Buzz" airs in Canada on the Family Channel and in lots of other countries outside Canada too. Unfortunately it's just not the U.S. (yet)

Testing, testing. One. Two. Three. Anyone out there?

Yeah. I've been a bad blogger. BAD. More like, non-existent. My apologies to anyone who might still be checking in. I've spent the better part of the last many months coloring a graphic novel for another artist. I haven't had time to draw anything of my own outside of the occassional post-it doodle. I'm almost done with revisions on the book...so, soon I hope to share with you many new illustrations! I might go crazy once I find a little free time to play! (I cannot wait!!)One of my resolutions this year was to be a better blogger...so, here's a minor attempt at gettin' goin' on this again.

The above illustration was drawn for a really sweet and fun book for the 10 year old girl in your life! Published by Simon Schuster, written by Julia DeVillers and Jennifer Roy, who happen to be identical twins. A second book in this series is in the works...I'm just not sure when it comes out. I'll be sure to post that cover once it is out in stores.

Los Chupacapras!

I put this image together for a 10K night run called "Los Chupacapras de la Noche" held in San Antonio, Texas last month. The character originated from my "Sasquatch and the Bunny" project but I think it came together nicely here with running shorts and headlamp!

Unfortunately, the t-shirts they made for the event came out terrible. Of course, that's just my personal opinion. My best guess is that they used the JPEG instead of the EPS file! Anyway, because I wanted a t-shirt I could wear...I've gone and made it available on my CafePress site. If you want one too...you can find that right here.

It's been forever since I participated in Illustration Friday. And, man! I've really missed it! I love this challenge so much. I wish I could participate every week but until I win that SuperLOTTO prize, I will need to continue trying to make enough money to house (and feed) me and my dog! ;0) Still, I'm hopeful that I will be able to play more often anyway!

This week's theme: Forgotten. For me, I could have gone a million different ways with this one...I've "forgotten" a lot! Where I put the KEYS, the garage door opener, the dog leash, my silver flip-flops, or what so-in-so said about who-was-it? Forgotten passwords are a given. Anyone else?

Palm Readin'

Ok, even though I drew this, I still have no idea what it all means when I look at my own palm. First, should I read my predominant hand (I'm a lefty). Or is it always the right hand? Does it matter? The lines LOOK different on each hand. I'm thinking I'm gunna go with the one that says I'm going to live the longest and be the happiest, where I get to travel the world, be married and have kids. Right? Which hand allows me to do all that?!! Maybe I should leave it to the "professionals"!!

I've always had an affection for Palm Reading signs...they're so cool, so mysterious and kind of kitschy too. I just haven't gathered the nerve to stop in one and get an actual reading. It's on that "that'd be cool to do some day" list. BUT, I get a little freaked out about the idea of someone else being able to glimpse into my future. Besides, I'd only really want to know good news. Bad news sucks. Period. No need for advance warning! And besides that, I'd probably worry that they were keeping bad news from me.

So yeah, guess I'll move this to the "I'm too chickenshit for this" list.

Ok...so after your done watching the "Presidents" marathon on The History Channel ( btw, Happy President's Day!) and the "Star Wars Tech" show....stay tuned for "The History of the Joke"...starring Lewis Black interviewing folks like George Carlin, Robin Williams, Dave Attell and many others. I say this because comedy is funny and because my lovely sister was the Talent Executive on the show. Of course, I'm super late in plugging the show but I thought it was on tomorrow night, not tonight. Grrr. Anyway...it's also on tomorrow night but at 1 AM. I don't usually last much later than that, but who knows, maybe one of you will have a tight deadline and need to pull an all-nighter. In that case, you've got something great to keep you awake!

Pizza Only, forever...

I don't know about you...but I don't think it would be terrible to have Pizza Only, for the rest of my life...as long as it's good pizza and different toppings were available! I really cannot remember ever having a pizza I didn't enjoy. Can you??

Anyway...these spot illustrations were for this months' "J-14 Yikes!" magazine...which is a popular magazine for the "Hannah Montana"/ "High School Musical" set. Well, I'm guessing that based on all the photos of Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron throughout the magazine. Anyway, the illustrations were a silly and gross little "quiz" of sorts... i.e. "Would you rather eat nothing but pizza for the rest of your life or never eat pizza again?"

"Would you rather wear the same socks for a month or the same underwear for a week?"
Yep..I'm serious...I didn't make up the scenarios...just drew the pictures.

"Would you rather wear your ski jacket all summer or your bathing suit all winter?"

"Would you rather shave your head or dye your hair neon green?"

My answers....
1. Even though I like pizza, I'd rather never eat it again. I'd cry about it though. I just don't think I could never not eat the occassional ice cream, slice of bacon, taco, or sushi roll. No can do.

2. Definitely socks.

3. Um, ski jacket? Unless I loose that 15 lbs! THEN I'll...um...yeah, no...no, I won't. Ski Jacket.

4. Since I've shaved my head before, I'd go with dying my hair neon green. (hopefully, it'd be one of those wash out dyes...)

Little Miss Mitzi

My little Miss Mitzi isn't doing too well right now. We think she's got invertabrae disc disease...and poor baby is in a lot of pain. Essentially, her breed is prone to this type of problem and I'm not sure how this happened but perhaps it was brought on by her jumping off and on some of my furniture. Maybe it got worse by all those walks we take?! I dunno, but she's such a trooper...hardly complains at all. Still sweet as can be, just not her normal peppy and happy self. (which breaks my heart). We've gone to the vet over 5 times in the past month trying to figure out what's been wrong. Treating her for possible gas, arthritis, blood tests and X-rays. Finally, we saw a specialist yesterday and so she's on bed rest for the next 6-8 weeks. Meaning that she's got to be crated. And I have to carry her out to pee and poop.
For 6-8 weeks!
We are on day 2.
Anyway, the hope is, if she's immobile for a while, she'll heal. Otherwise, we will have to do something like surgery.

Mitzi is only xix years old. (okay, in dog years---she's my age, practically middle aged) and like me, she's far too young for this!! Sooooo, please send some good vibes/prayers her way...I would greatly appreciate it. I want my baby girl to be happy and healthy again very, very soon.

Superstition

It's a quicky since there was lots going on this week.

I have this superstition that I better post something for last week's Illustration Friday (the theme was Superstition)--or--ELSE!! So, of course, I'm all about posting something, even if I'm terribly late. It's kind of like one of those horrible chain emails that claim you have to send it on to 10 friends in the next 2 minutes or you will have bad luck for the next 12 years. Who wants to risk that?! (So please, I beg you....do not include me on your list for these forwards!)

I'm also all about posting a superstition that may bring about GOOD LUCK...which we all can use, right?! "Fingers crossed" has thought to bring good luck since...well, at least since my days in the school playground. Maybe centuries. Anyway, a long time. Occasionally, I use this highly deft method as an adult too...and it always seems to make whatever I don't have any control over, a little more hopeful...like, "Hey! I'm doing what I can here" even if it's just crossing a couple of fingers.
Wacky? Yes! Hopeful? You betcha. Helpful? Who knows.

Scale

See, I'm a Libra, so when I saw this week's Illustration Friday theme was the word, "scale" I immediately thought I'd like to draw some sort of variation on my Zodiac symbol. And since I love cupcakes, it all seemed to make logical sense to me. I considered many other ideas though...and it was hard for me to figure out which direction I wanted to take with this...did I want to draw something relating to weight, to size or judgement? All things that might have made this a much stronger illustration. And then, after I decided to just get started on this... I thought...what should be on these plates??? Should she be weighing her options...cupcakes versus fruit? Or are her "balanced" and equal plated cupcakes okay? And now, it occurs to me (finally!) that this is fine the way it is. Just let it go! See, as a Libra, I might be "balanced" and fair-minded but, dagnabbit, it's hell to make a simple decision sometimes! So, fine...here, have a cupcake Libra girl!!

The theme for Illustration Friday this week is "Hats". Hats are awesome. I love hats. Unfortunately, I look horrid in most of them. Soooooo, all the more reason to enjoy putting them on my characters, yes?! Um, TOTALLY! True, not a whole lotta concept involved here but I had a whole lotta of fun doing it.

Re-vamped!

Here's the cover I drew for the 3rd book in the "My Sister the Vampire" series, due in stores November 20th. The first two books are already available in the Young Reader (early chapter books) sections of your local, big-chained bookstores! YAY! Fourth one is due in December or January or February...I'll have to check on that. (* this is sort of a poor quality jpeg lifted from Amazon and I will try and get a crisper version from HarperCollins. I didn't think it would be appropriate for me to post the image without the title, which is all I have here)

Meanwhile, the name of this particular cover seems in line with some of what I've been trying to do this past weekend. RE-VAMP! Slowly but surely, I'm getting rid of unneccessary emails, tidying up my messy desktop, shredding old credit card offers and donating that beautiful old sweater from 1998 (among many other things). Oh yes, and breathing new life into this blog!!!! I've a looooong way to go, but it feels good to have started.

when you're not sure what to do because of a lack of focus, a need to procrastinate, desire to avoid dealing with dreaded taxes or organizing your (filthy) art desk, etc ... a simple solution is--draw some girl doodleheads!! Works wonders everytime! (none of those other things get done but, hey....look, cute girl doodleheads...)

And if you have an 8-11 year old girl---you might want to pick up the first couple "My Sister The Vampire" books, written by Sienna Mercer. Yours truly did the book covers! (There are 4 in total and the first 2 are out now)

Her previous name was Gypsy but I've started getting to know her over the past few hours now and I'm feeling a very strong "Mitzi" vibe. I feel kinda weird changing her name but maybe a new name will also be a sign of a new and happy life.

Originally, Gypsy (now, Mitzi) was a breeder dog for 6 years and once her "work" was deemed complete, the breeder called the boston terrier rescue group to have her picked up that day or she'd be taken the pound. Terrible!!!! (stories like this break my heart!)

Soooooo, now she's living here with me, in the lap of luxury! Ok, my digs aren't exactly luxurious but I imagine my actual lap is nice and soft and comfy, therefore...complete luxury! We're gunna go on lots and lots of walks and she's going to be spoiled with lots of love and affection!

Those of you who might be fans of stand-up comedy and might be home (and awake) at midnight tonight, ya might wanna check out the 2nd season premiere of "Live at Gotham" on Comedy Central. I haven't seen any of it yet, but my brilliant and amazingly kick-ass sister books the show (as well as the Improv Comedy Clubs) sooooooooo, watch it if you can! I'll be watching it because I love my sister and because, comedy can be funny!

Crushin'

Ever had an over-the-top crush on someone? Mine was Mark F. in 8th grade. I was crazy-in-love! {Like, maybe even a little stalker-like.} I cruised my bike by his house, often. I offered to help him out with his paper route. I wrote his name on lots of sheets of paper. I swooned over his tan. (It was the 80's in Southern Cal)Though, I must say, for a 12-13 year old, I had pretty good taste...this guy had the bluest eyes and lots of lashes.

Sadly, Mark never liked me back---but, he did dance with me once. Slow dance, even. And to this day, if I ever hear that song (which is rare, it was less popular Eagles song called "I can't tell you why")-- I think wistfully back to those early days when my hormones first kicked in! Ahhhhhhh! Those torturous, evil hormones!

The above illustration was drawn for QuizFest Magazine. In this particular illo's case---it was something like "Would you rather have your crushes name on your forehead or scream it in the cafeteria?" I'll post some of the other illos in the coming days

Girly Doodle Heads

Hello! This here "illo" is really just a bunch of doodleheads thrown onto my scanner for the fun of it. They're not particularly excellent or anything...it's just that I draw girl heads ALL THE TIME (it's like a weird habit) and I've got a shoebox full of 'em and what the heck else am I going to do with them?!! (actually, I plan to collage them onto paintings, someday) Mainly, I needed a little something new on the ol' blog here so this seemed like a no-brainer. And it was just the sort of thing I could waste some time on before getting "real" about the assignments I have before me. I've been a busy, drawing maniac over the past few weeks and will be for a few more too. It feels good to wrangle several projects and I'm actually doing a pretty good job at it.... that is, considering my tendency to procrastinate and my ability to become completely distracted by shiny objects or food.

Love Floats

Happy Valentines Day, People! I hope you get lots of really good and yummy chocolate...and whatever else your heart desires! (we'll leave it at that!)

This is another old and rejected design. A couple of years ago a card company asked me to submit some drawings for Valentines. I was certain that 10 of my 13 or so designs would sell. I was practically counting my money!! hahahahahaha. Turns out, they didn't want any. I look back on them now and still feel like I should have sold ...well, okay...at least ONE!! :0(
They're not that bad!! Actually, they said they liked them but I was told there might be too much "white space" in my designs and that they were looking for more specific cards like, "For My Nephew". O' well...ok, it was a good lesson! And truthfully, a good project for my portfolio. I'm pretty sure some of those very designs (and my use of white space) helped me to land the Wubbzy gig.
So, where one door shuts, another one opens!! Ain't that nice?!!

The topic for this week's Illustration Friday is the "80s". Like, totally!

I had a lot of fun thinking about things that reminded me of the Eighties tonight....things like; parachute pants, Aqua Net'd bangs, clove cigarettes, izods, burmuda shorts and topsiders, early Madonna, rockin' with the likes of Van Halen or Nightranger, Olivia Newton-John (the "Let's get Physical" era) baggy socks and LA Gear sneakers and dolphin shorts!

And just how do I know SOOOO MUCH about the "80s"?
Well, youngin's...I was, like totally, there.

Yes, like, that does resemble a Mullet! (However, I believe we called that a "tri-level" hairstyle back then) Egads!!

The Early Buzz

Oh, hi!
I can't believe it! I am actually participating in Illustration Friday again! WOO HOO!! Looks like an excellent start to 2007!!

The topic for this week is "Buzz".

And well, ok...this is an extreme cheat because I drew these concept drawings a couple years ago. Yeah, I know--pulling from the trash heap doesn't really count!! But maybe I could just squeeze these in...
Anyway, these were for a preschool "bumper" idea I called, " The Early Buzz". It was kinda silly-- Bugs would report on a "word of the day" like, say, "Snowflake" or "Sunrise". They would inform the preschool audience all about it --scientifically, educationally and creatively. I still don't think the idea is as stinky as the executive I pitched it to did. BUT, whatever, the illustration fits the topic for Illustration Friday perfectly! So, it wasn't a complete waste!! WOO HOO!

Anyway, here's a couple more, since I had them n' all. (I'd like to redesign some of these bugs, big time!)

I love 2007 already. Its just so fresh, shiny and full-of-potential!! Smells like new beginnings.
Ahhhh.

Now, about those resolutions...
Well, I have a whole bunch of course, but, the main ones are pretty basic...be as healthful as you can stand and have lots of laughs. Make time to visit and play with the people I love! Get creative whenever you get a chance too.

I'm also open to adopting a dog (please, landlord!) and aquiring a (not too shiny) new man-friend too! Ah, the possibilities!!

Cheers to you all. I hope your 2007 is marked with much joy and happiness! And stellar health too!

Hello. It's Christmas! JOY! { replaces "YAY!" as a festive holiday exclammation}

This morning while I stood in line at the bakery (at 6AM!) I was thinking-- there must be some drawing somewhere in my files that I might be able to post to my blog to commemorate the holidays! (I really ran out of time and focus this season) And then, one pumpkin pie, one "Parisian" Chocolate cake, and a HUGE non-fat Latte later-- I found this crappy little doodle. Wait, does that sound like I ate all that? No, only consumed the Latte, which was delish. But, I digress---I drew this doodle a few years ago. I must say, I chuckled upon finding it. There's nothing wrong with wishing you lots and lots of gifts this Christmas, right??
Especially if they are gifts of happiness, health, peace, prosperity, joy and some outright sillyness!!Right?? So, go and have yourselves a very Merry Giftmas!

WOW! WOW!...YAY!

"Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" is a sweet little pre-school show airing on Nick Jr. I was lucky enough to have been part of the design team (character/prop designer) over the past year. And if you know what kind of year I had, you might well have guessed that I was working with an amazing assortment of people who supported, understood and even picked-up-the-slack for me when needed. (special thanks to Bob, Teri, Sandra, Jason, Brian J, Kyle, Andrea, Jess, Karl, Pete and Kerry) I really felt I had the support of the entire Wubbzy crew and from Bolder Media too. Besides the fact that everyone was really nice....and talented...they were also a lot of fun, wickedly funny and the show is so cute! I could not have asked for more!! For all these reasons and many more...Wubbzy will forever be close to my heart!!!

And some good news... the show and it's creator, Bob Boyle were just nominated for three "Annie Awards"! How cool is that??!! YAY!!! Congratulations! (my fingers are crossed for season 2!!)

Mardi Gras Devil

Here's a little postcard I drew for my Mom's upcoming High School Reunion. Her school mascot is the devil and the theme for the event is Mardi Gras. That's all. No deep or sordid meaning/ message. It is NOT a "save the date" card for Mardi Gras in Hell. Though, I sorta like that idea. I drew a very similar version a few years ago for Mom's last Reunion.

I did struggle with "virgin themed" ideas for this, hence---the lack of serious concept. As the deadline loomed ever-closer it was apparent that I really just needed to paint. Even tho this little painting lacks hip irreverence, cool concept or design, I really enjoyed getting goopy with paint again. Oh, and there you can see bits of my messy studio...also known as the kitchen table that never gets cleaned. Ever.

Awareness

OK! Soooooo, I figured I ought mention my long absence from this blog and since this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month n' all, now is as good a time as any, right? On day 3 of my new job last year, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. GAH!! Can you believe it??! I couldn't either. It was not FUN in any way, but I did get through it. With incredible love, humor and support from friends and family too. I am very lucky (it's all relative, you know) and I'm OK now. We caught it early and treated it aggressively. So now, I get to return to living my long, happy and full life! I'm a survivor, damnit! WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO! (and I really mean that WOOO HOOO part!)

Certainly, I'm open to share my experience or answer questions you might have. I'm actually really open about all of that. Sometimes, I fear, maybe a little TOO much so. However, I'd prefer not muddle this blog with too much on this particular subject nor do I want to scare anyone away by the mere mention of it. Trust me, I want to get back to DRAWING! The experience of this past year has definitely, profoundly changed me. It scared me, scarred me and taught me a whole lot about life and death and what is really important. I hope I never lose sight of that. Soooooooo, with all that said...LADIES (AND GENTS TOO)--early detection is KEY. Please, please, do regular self examinations. And, Ladies, get those yearly mammograms by the time you're 40!!! OKAY?!??! Please!
The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to treat and better the prognosis!

Here's a lite take on the BEFORE, DURING and AFTER process that is breast cancer for many: straight hair to no-hair to some crazy-poodle-hair. (chemo freaks out the hair follicles)

I know, I know LONG TIME no post!! I'm here to remedy this with new(ish) works to share!

Back in July and August, before beginning the full time job on "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" I did a series of drawings for Joyent, a start up company up in San Fransisco. Joyent is headed by a very nice group of gentlemen who were really FANTASTIC to work with. I had a lot of fun making these drawings too. A big thanks to David Young, Brian Bell, John Gruber for making the experience very pleasant and easy. Additional thanks to Cameron Moll for his lovely shout out here. Well, I can't say it was all easy because it sucked up every waking moment of my life for weeks BUT they were generally, very pleased with what I gave them... which is always what you strive for as a commerical artist. The process worked...we went over my rough storyboards and character sketches, discussed, made changes, I then moved on to color comps (my illustrator drawings without textures) on to final with textutes and tweaks. Overall, any changes they requested made great sense for their product and made my drawings stronger too. I'm a fan of these guys and wish'em tons of success.

I'll post an additional drawing or two in the coming days but for now, here's a couple more:

Tatzelwurm

Here's Tatzelwurm. Rumored to exist in Austria but really holding up with C.L.U.B. (The Collective League of Unidentified Beasts) in the secluded mountains of Northern California. He's genuis and just plain weird. You know the type...very smart but lacking in some basic, social skills. Al ( my partner on the project) and I both really liked to refer to him as a sharp-toothed hotdog. So, yes, another old drawing to tide us over until I can share something new.

Dr. Peter Hickenlopper

Yep, still pulling from the files here. Same dead project, different character. This is Dr. Peter Hickenlopper. I could tell you a lot about him but the short story is that he used to be a respectable anthropologist until he went a little over the edge in his search for Sasquatch. Now he spends his days (and nights) searching for "evidence" and making what he believes are Sasquatch mating calls. Those"mating calls" are terribly unsuccessful, Sasquatch is NOT attracted to thouse sounds, not in the least. But Hickenlopper does draw a lot of attention from all the small woodland critters!

One of these days, I'll draw something new. Heck, with all the time I spent online tonight, I could very well have drawn something. BUT, let me tell you...the browse online took me to many amazing blogs by many EXTREMELY talented artists. You might want to take a look at my sidebar-0-links...there are some serious heavy hitters over there. New links like, John Nevarez, Stephan Kardos and Hans Bacher...just to name a few. More to come too.

I was lucky enough to have some of the best art direction of my life, way back in the late 90's by Hans Bacher (mentioned above). I was just assigned to take over as Lead Artist on the Mulan Animated Storybook (an interactive game) and he was the Production Designer on the movie. I met with him several times (with my Producer) for him to review my designs. I had to design something like 40 or so printable "trading cards" and other things I no longer remember. Now, I must say this first...I'd already been working at the company for a couple years...at least, and this was the first time a Production Designer from a Feature (in my experience, anyway) who actually took the time to meet with us "less-regarded" video game people. I showed him my designs (which I was quite proud of since they were my first attempts with Illustrator) and he had many, many notes for me. But, really...what was amazing was that they were REAL, substantial and absolutely dead-on notes. It was like a miracle for me. I remember smiling with every change request...because I knew, for probably the first time in my professional experience, that I was finally getting some excellent art direction. Of course, I would have loved to get everything right on first or even second pass...but it really was like a gift to receive these kinds of notes. Lightbulbs flashed in my head as I thought "Of course!! You're so right!" and "YES!! Give me more, please!!" That doesn't happen every day and it's definitely worth mentioning.
Coincidentally, I had the same experience today, with my new boss, Bob Boyle. He reviewed my character designs for Wubbzy. Man! It makes such a huge difference when you are working for someone who has a clear vision and they can draw a little scribble on a post-it and the design magically becomes so much better. You know that you aren't just spinning your wheels trying to read someone's mind...the answers are shown to you and you "get it"! Ahhhhh, how I love that.

Hi, Peeps! Thank you for all the warm wishes. First day at the new gig went very well. I met a lot of very nice (and super talented) folks and already learned quite a bit. The hardest thing was sitting there at my new desk...you know, just being in an open cube situation. It'll just take some getting used too...I definitely felt weird about checking email or the internet....which is something I normally do ALL DAY LONG, when working from home. Already though, I totally dig my new cube-mates, Sandra and Kyle. I definitley had my share of questions yesterday and everyone was incredibly helpful. I've already learned a lot of new "quick keys" in Illustrator CS Software! Wooo hooo! Gotta love that. (See, I'm one of those "don't like to read manual" types...so tidbits and tricks shown to me are like golden nuggets)

Here's a drawing of Big Monkey. He's just a really BIG monkey. Kind of an Ashton Kutcher-likes-to-play-cranks and thinks everything is super funny. He shares the house with Nessie, Red and many others. So yes...another old drawing. I think I'll just keep pulling from that particular file until I have time again to draw something new to share. Some of you (drawingboard pals) have already seen these, so I apologize for the repeats!

Today is....

....my very first day at a new job. The past two years I've worked from home doing freelance for just about every conceivable type of project. I've done concept design mostly: for an animated feature, props, video games and a couple small start-ups needed illustration or other design related work . Before all this, I was freelance but working 3 days at The Jim Henson Company (as an Art Director) Before that, I worked full time there. Soooo, it's been 6 years since I've had a "first day" on the job. I'm feeling some jitters. But, that is normal...right?! Just like the first day of school I have a new outfit, have sharpened some pencils and woke up extra early. I'm both excited and scared.
One reason I'm excited is that I will have regular hours...well, hopefully. I do know that I can't possibly work non-stop like I do at home. The past several months have been unbelievably busy and my personal life has suffered from it. Go figure, huh? The freelance really starts taking off and I take a 9-to-5 job!! Anyway... I'm scared that I will not be "up to snuff" and that I will struggle to keep up with all the talented folks at this new place. But, I can remember starting jobs in the past feeling the same way, so I know I will eventually overcome that...by working hard and diligently. I'm excited to make new friends. But I'm scared that I won't have the same freedoms I've enjoyed over the past many years, like taking off for long weekends or visiting my parents on a whim. I'm excited that I will have a regular paycheck again and hopefully, save some money. I'll miss my "Court TV" and the random breaks I take to scour the web for more lovely things to view. Most of all, I'm excited to learn and face all my new challenges...to learn the tasks of a Character Designer.

I don't plan on writing details about my new job here. This blog is still primarily a place for me to post new doodles and drawings (and sometimes OLD ONES) when time has run out and I don't have anything new. Like today. Today's drawing is of Nessie, the Loch Ness. She comes from the same project as Red, the Black Bear (posted below) so, the drawing is a couple years old. This depiction of Nessie shows her to be a bit of a "Marianne Faithful" sort of Punk. She shares the house with a whole slew of Cryptozoology's finest and spents most her time in the Jacuzzi. No one understands her thick Scottish brogue. Her housemates assume she's brilliant though.

OK! Off to shower and get ready for my "first day"!! Wish me luck!

Ok, sorta cheated this week. No time to draw for Illo Friday right now so I had to dig up something from my files. This lil' character was created (amongst many) for a show I was developing a couple years back. The pitch got good reviews, overall, but it never found a home. waaaaa! My friend Al and I had a great time working on it though. We laughed, we cried and a little like our pal, Red the Black Bear...we consumed much vino too.

Illustration Friday: AGING

A little on the late side for this week's Illustration Friday theme, "Aging". And it's not because I forgot or even a result of being tired (both symptoms of old age) I was simply buried with work. But wait, I am forgetful and I'm exhausted too. Add to that, the numbers. And the numbers don't lie, I am getting older!! Dammit!!

Instead of waxing on and on about aches, wrinkles and those snarky greys...I kept thinking of the song "Young-at-Heart" by ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra. Great song. Wonderful song. So, then I started thinking about little kids...and this image came to mind. One of those seldom times where the idea AND the execution came together nice and quick. Which is great, considering my age and all!! ;)

Got blog banner?

Alrighty! Many of you have contacted me asking how to add a banner to the top of your blog. I struggled with this too. Blogger's Dashboard doesn't really make it too easy, does it?! Well, I ended up doing what you guys did, I found and contacted someone else with a banner in place and they kindly offered up the information. (Thanks, Jaime!) So, in the spirit of communal bloggin' and all that...here's what I did:

First, I have my own home site where I host my images and hotlink to this blog. There are other options for uploading images to blogger, but I've not tried these so you'll have to try'em out yourselves. I'm using the minima template by designer, Douglas Bowman. My banner image is 649 pixels in width and 149 pixels, height. I'm guessing that different sizes and different templates work essentially the same, just tossing out that information as a possible guide.

I tried copying the code here in this post but for whatever reason, if wasn't working. So, instead... I'm including the image below. It will HOPEFULLY, in the least, guide you to where you can make the changes. You will find the html in your template folder. Oh, and not to confuse you....there should NOT be any birds in your coding... ;)

Good Luck y'all and thanks again for all the incredible comments and emails. **I'm in the middle of a couple assignments right now, so it may a few more days until I can post a new drawing.

EDIT: Please note!! I am in no way an aficionado when it comes to coding html/blogs or anything technical! I just wanted to pass along whatever information I had that might be helpful to others...as I had many requests for it. I'm sorry that I can't upload the actual html for easy cut and paste...the blogger formatting doesn't seem to allow this. Also, it's quite possible this code only works on the template I've used. Ultimately, it's the "header" section in your template that would need tweaking. If and when I learn more tidbits, I'm happy to share! Also, thanks to all of you who added further information in the comments section.

I guess I've now got birds on the brain (or I'm bird brained!) but this is what I came up with for this week's Illustration Friday theme, which is "tranquility". What's better than a nice soak in a bath after a long day of foraging worms for dinner and building nests? Only thing missing here is a glass of wine, me thinks.

As we all know...there is something particularly tranquil about water... whether one is drinking, soaking, floating or sitting beside it. Personally, I have a lame tub for soaking...it's too short and not very deep. I sometimes pretend it's much more luxurious and accommodating by adding pretty smelling soaps and lighting a candle. Not very creative, but you can sort of escape this way. Still, the damned faucet is drip-dripping and the porcelain against my shoulders is cold. I don't have regular access to a hot tub/spa/jacuzzi either, but those are particularly nice on a cool evening (with said glass of wine). At the end of my swim work-out, if I'm not sharing a lane with anyone else....I take a good solid minute or two to just float. Some might regard it a little strange perhaps, but that 60 seconds of buoyancy, floating atop the water and breathing in deep is a particularly tranquil moment I enjoy. And we all need those moments.

So, a weird thing happened.. a weird, lovely and slightly overwhelming thing. Both BoingBoing and Blogger's "blogs of note" put "shout outs" to my blog on the same day. A whole lotta people, from all over, browsed on by and a great many (okay, geesh, like over a hundred of you!!!) left very nice comments. Admittedly, I became slightly obsessed with checking my email and blog for new posts because.... I just could not believe all the responses! It was absolutely crazy. So, please know that I really appreciate all of you who took the time to click and leave a comment. I thought maybe I could draw a picture of myself holding up my own swollen and oversized head...but opted instead for a simple thank you birdy. Hopefully the little bird will suffice for my big hearty thanks. And hopefully, I won't grow a huge head and start wearing an ascott.

Some folks asked to know a little more about me and/or my work. So, here's a little background: I've been paying rent as a working artist for the past 11-12 years. Starting out in the Interactive arena and now, transitioning into Animation. Most everything on my blog and site was drawn for the fun of it: to beef up the portfolio and/or to just improve my skills, (Unless otherwise noted on my site) Sometimes I just draw because I can't deal with watching anymore "Court TV". Most of my paying work does not legally belong to me OR it is something that I'm not interested in pursuing... that kind of stuff I just leave out. Most all my artwork is digital with the basic drawing done in Adobe Illustrator and textural details added in Adobe PhotoShop. I received a BFA in Illustration at a California State University. Drawing makes me happy.

A lot of people who meet me think I'm from the Mid-West. I think that's because I'm generally pretty nice, say thank you and please and smile regularly. I think maybe my drawings reflect that too. Don't be fooled though, I am native Californian and I can be just as cranky as the next guy when I'm cut off in traffic.

Let's see, what else? Hey! Have any of you checked the links in my sidebar??? Or the links page on my site? There are TONS of great artists/ illustrators and crafts-people out there doing fabulous things. I learn from all these guys on a regular basis. I love the internet...check 'em out!! I will be adding lots more as time passes too.

Swan Lake

I decided to take another stab at the whole "Metropolitan" theme from last week's Illustration Friday. Just for fun. So here's she is, the same gal from the illustration below, at the Ballet. Perhaps this is even the same day...after her walk through the city. Of course, it could be the Opera or a theatre show she's attending...but I have a feeling she's there to see the classic "Swan Lake". I remember how much I loved seeing Swan Lake at the Paris Opera House in the late 80's....sitting under that amazing Chagall painting. Oh my, what an overwhelming delight that was.

I almost cried.

Illustration Friday: METROPOLITAN

Here's this week's drawing for Illo Fri....it's a slice of Metropolitan life. I thought about illustrating something with more hustle and bustle, crowds or even a more elegant moment with skyscrappers filling the skies . BUT, I just kept finding myself thinking of a more European/Soho/ parts of San Fran kind of setting instead, though my drawing depicts none of these specifically. A bazillion years ago I studied for a semester in Paris and more recently dated my man in San Fran (before he moved closer)...and the perfect day was to walk around the city neighborhoods and stop somewhere to loiter over a nice latte or glass of wine. That's MY idea of true city life. Here in Los Angeles, my life is more Suburban than Metropolitan...like the song says "Nobody walks in LA". Ahhh... but someday, I would love to live in San Francisco with a scruffy little dog. I hope I won't be 80 then and unable to walk those hills!

Here's a belated "Sport" themed drawing for last week's Illustration Friday. I'm not all that familiar with yoga so this pose is probably way off the map in terms of authenticity. Truth be told, I don't really care all that much...which, I hope some of you who follow a strict yoga discipline won't find blasphemous... I don't mean any harm. I just liked the shape of my initial sketch and decided to take it to finish. If you've got a name for this pose (made up or not) I'm looking for a "title". This was drawn in Illustrator and touched up in Photoshop.

Just got back from a nice, lazy vacation visiting my parents up in NorCal. It was really lovely. Got to visit some old friends from my childhood (Hello, Dyers!!) and spend a lot of quality time with my bitchen' kick-ass parents. Basically, we shopped, we ate, we went to the movies, we ate some more, we shopped some more, sunbathed, dined al fesco, drank a lot of wine, worked on crosswords together, read magazines and books, and just plain-ol' hung-out. It was great. Did I mention that we ate... a lot? Ah, How I've missed my parents' cooking!

Thank God, Lap Swim at the local pool is in full swing. I need it more than ever now~

Dad and I took a morning and drove out to sketch and paint the scenery by a local river. Well, I guess I should say... Dad sketched and painted the scenery....from life, that is. His watercolors were really nice and I totally felt intimated because it's been so long since I've tried drawing anything from life. It's sorta like my whole "painting" issue, I guess. I ended up painting a couple of cartoony dead bugs (loosely based on the dead bugs on the picnic table we were sitting at) and a racoon strewn about in some leaves. We didn't see any racoons...but that's just what ended up happening when my pencil hit the paper. I didn't think to bring the drawings home...but maybe I can get Dad to send them to me...along with one of his sketches from that day. I feel lucky that my Dad and I share a love for drawing and painting. It means a lot to me. It was either that or I was going to have to develop a love for tying flies. ;) Mom and I share a love for SHOPPING!! So, I'm lucky for that too! Peni and Tony...I love you! Illustration Friday: HERO

The week's theme for Illustration Friday is "Hero". And this little diddy
was influenced by my Grandma Amy...who was and always will be a hero to me. Though she looked NOTHING like the generic styled "Super Gram" illustrated here. NO buns or glasses for my Granny and she hardly ever had any gray hair. She didn't wear her apron like a cape either...but, she WAS beloved by ALL her 6 grandkids and she served up a delicious "Sunshine Frosting" cake.

I'm not blown away by this little painting, in fact, I'm a little embarrassed about it. Still, I'm glad I did it. I haven't painted in a long, long time and it just felt kinda good to give it whirl. I should have "designed" this more...you know, paying more attention to composition and character, but, ach, I didn't. Just decided to doodle a light sketch on to a scrap of Stonehedge paper ( such yummy paper!!) and start painting. I did find myself missing my computer while working on this...I missed not being able to change colors on the fly, tweak things, etc. I had hoped doing a little painting would "loosen" me up but the opposite was more true. Argh. Maybe next time!

Off to Northern California for a family reunion. I'm so looking forward to seeing my parents, sister, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and my grandpa and great uncle too. We're going to eat good food, tell stories, drink some beer (Pooler's love beer) and pose with "bunny ears" in pictures. It's what we do. And I like that.

Hoo wee, just had an earthquake here! Exciting. Scary. Not too sure how major it was somewhere but it shook pretty good here. Oh, news says it was 5.3...so it wasn't too-too major. But still, things were swinging here and I even felt dizzy as I stood patiently in the doorway waiting for it to complete. Earthquakes are always soo crazy. They freak me out but afterwards, it's weirdly euphoric. In the good old days...I used to always yell out "EARTHQUAKE" when they occurred. One time, I was taking a nap with the dogs and cat, alone at home....yet, I still felt the urge to yell aloud, "Earthquake!!!". Which is ridiculous, really...as if Punkin, Pepsi and Phoebe really needed this vital information...all they knew was that their naps had been disturbed.

After the big Northridge quake, I was yelling "Earthquake!" quite a bit. The next day, may parents and sister came up for a visit. We had a nice jolt moments after they arrived. Immediately, I yelled out "AFTERSHOCK!" and my sister was quick to berate me. "Gee Paige, you're getting to be quite an expert in discerning the difference between the two" . tee hee. I swear, I really don't know that I'm saying anything at all...I guess it's just my natural instinct. As silly as that is. This time, I didn't yell or scream anything...but, I'm sure the words "Shit, earthquake" did exit my mouth. I did just run outside to see if there were any neighbors around. But no. Dangit. Anyhoo, this was not what I was going to post about today BUT was interrupted by it. Hoooo weeeee. Maybe it's a REALLY good thing I'm heading north! My legs are still a little shaky.

Ok, I'm a little distracted from what I was going to write about. So, maybe later...I'll talk more about my fabulous family. And they are fabulous.

Edit: I'm back. Quake wasn't too big or bad. It's been downgraded to a 4.9 (News reports say) in the desert. Nothing broke...no reports of injury. Phew. Now, I'm really ready for my drive up North.

Illustration Friday-SUMMER

Woo Hooo! It's SUMMER! How convenient that this week's "Illustration Friday" theme coincides with a drawing I began a few weeks back. Due to tight and endless deadlines the drawing sat unattended far too long and the front page of my website remained spring-themed past Memorial Day!! The horror!! Thank you, Illustration Friday Peeps-- for inspiring me to finish this, update my webpage and to welcome in the Summer too!

Actually, this illustration is three-fold. I love to swim and the neighborhood pool doesn't open for lap swim until June 18. I've been calling Burbank Parks and Recreation for months begging them to open the pools early. But NO! They would have nothing to do with it. So, while I wait for the pool to open, I continue to eat cheese and all-things-bad but imagine that I will quickly get back in shape the moment they open the gates again. ;0) So, ok...the drawing serves as a reminder to get my butt to the pool...JUNE 18th! No excuses.

The third reason for this illustration...or, really the background on it: I was a swimmer for the better part of my childhood and teens. Not exceptional in any way...a steady second placer. I lived across the street from a public, olympic sized pool and I had HUGE crushes on a couple of the local lifeguards. OH, they were so HOT... beautiful surfer types with lean, tan bodies (tan was "in" during the 80's) and I could not resist oogling over them every chance I could. Ahhhh, those teen years.

Does it look like she's in love with a foot or do you "get" that it's a lifeguard??!

Here's another oldie for this week's Illustration Friday. I think it was drawn last summer, maybe last fall. It was for a small press magazine and the article was about "Kids-N-Computers" . It's a little hard to see the details at this size...but, o'well.

I had a break from the deluge of work over this past weekend! It was nice to be free... got to see a movie ("crash"), went to a flea market (Pasadena City College), ate good food (Thai) and consumed a couple cocktails (mohitos). Ahhhhh, I really needed that.

Still unable to find time to draw outside of the current work schedule, I've noticed a particular craving to draw something, ANYTHING that is just for the fun of it. I think I may be suffering from Illustration Friday withdrawals. I really wish to participate, for real. Dangit!!

Suddenly, I remembered drawing this silly illo a couple month's ago (for fun, not an assignment)...there IS water involved....and this week's them is AQUATIC...so, maybe we can all just pretend I drew this today.

It's quite possible that once you see a kid with this kind of look on his face, you might not feel like being very aquatic anymore.

Plus, I'm looking forward to my newest boyfriend's arrival as Harold hasn't really stepped up to the plate (so so speak) Actually, my father called and left me a voice message...with some warped-pseudo- accent pretending to be Harold. You can't fool me, Pops!

Anyway, I apologize for my lack of entries lately. The freelance has kept me very, very busy. I have lots of ideas brewing for past Illustration Fridays...so, hopefully, I'll get a break and get caught up.

KIDS ART: Featuring Aaron C.

Kids Art amazes me. In the coming weeks, I'd like to introduce and feature some of my favorite kids and their art. Here's the first:
Aaron C.
Aaron C. is 10 years old. He is the son of Shane and Alicia...and Shane has been like a little brother to me since we were kids ourselves. A little background: I brought Shane home from school one day (I was in Eighth, Shane in Seventh) because my sister (in Fifth grade) thought he was really cute. Since that moment, he became a member of the family. Shane's family and my family became very close. His older brother Greg was even my first kiss!! Unfortunately, with our crazy lives and distance between us all we don't get to visit very often. We all got to visit at the Holiday's this past Christmas and this is when I got to see HOW VERY EXCELLENT an artist Aaron has become.
Aaron loves to draw and he's got piles of character drawings, action drawings and stories to go with all of them. He's got the talent and the passion! Not only that, he's a charming, charismatic and sweet boy too. He was so good with my two nephews that evening that he melted my heart. Of course, I felt an affinity with him because of his love for art and drawing. I was honored that he gave me a few drawings too!!!! (They proudly sit with me at my art desk)

Here's the first one. I don't remember what Aaron titled it, so I refer to it as "Serpent Attack!"

And finally, here is a drawing of Harold Jalsone. Aaron told me that Harold was my new boyfriend. I asked him what Harold did for a living and he told me that he was a Skateboard Designer! How cool is that!?!!!! No accountants for me! Woo hooo.

Just a little chihuahua doodle so I can say this blog is active!

Still hecka-busy on a really cool project that will probably keep me inside for the better part of the next month. It's all super-OK though, this project is teaching me so much, Though it leaves me no time to draw doodleheads or participate in Illustration Friday. I'm hoping maybe this weekend?!?!?!

Hey, by the way, great news!! I start a (non-freelance) job-job in August. You know, the kind where you to to an office on a daily basis!! I'm very excited to have some normalcy again, a regular paycheck, eventual benefits and all that. Most of all though, I'm excited because it's the only kind of job-job I'd actually WANT to take, if not being freelance anyway. A dream come true, really. I will be joining the "Wubby" team as a character designer for a Nick Jr. Show! Everyone seems so nice and welcoming, I can hardly wait to start. The creator, Bob Boyle, has his own blog too... showing the progress of the show in development. I had several ideas for this but opted out for the simplest (and fasted to compose) since I've got tons of freelance right now (YAY!) *Drawn in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

It's interesting... this whole Illustration Friday thang is making me think and draw a little "darker" than what I normally do on my own. I like that. I hope to be able to push things further when my time frees up a little more.

Illustration Friday-TRAVEL

Hello. I'm posting my Illustration Friday WAY late this week! Freelance work came in...so I was glued to my drawing desk and not able to get to this until tonight! I am NOT complaining because I love when work comes my way!!

Anyway, you could call this illustration TRAVEL (which was this past week's theme)...or you could call this CROWDED (the previous week's theme)...or you could call this what I'm calling it... "Flying Coach on United". In any case, this is more a "character study" than it is a full blown illustration...I mean, how else can I explain away the fact that you can't see the back of the plane??? Anyway, this was all prompted by last month's fabulous trip to Ireland. All was great but the air travel bordered on criminal. Please...just gimme an inch or two (maybe even three!!) more for my legs dammit...I'm 6 feet tall!!

Currently, my head feels a little CROWDED with all the pesky little tasks I should be taking care of...you know... taxes, finding more freelance work, clean out junk drawers, drop off dry cleaning, get a new man...etc. The list is endless

This image was sketched very quickly in photoshop. I'm hoping to revisit and redraw in Illustrator.

**Say, anyone know a quicky tutorial for Blogger sites. I'd love to figure out how to personalize this thing a little more.

Illustration Friday: BLOOM

Alrighty, so... I've wanted to participate in Illustration Friday for awhile now but needed to start a blog to do so. So, last night I finally signed up and got the BLOG. I check the IlloFri site today and now I'm not entirely sure if I'm early for this week or late for last. Regardless, this is an illo I did a few months back and I think it fits the week's theme which is/ was BLOOM. My depiction here is to illustrate a new love that is blooming.

Hellooooo!

Yep, just what the world needs...another self-absorbed blog. ;0) I promise to keep it simple. First off, I'm not sure how often I will update this thing, but I'm going to give "once a week" a try. I'm bewildered as to how so many of you fine folk are able to keep up with your own sites, create your art, read other sites regularly and still manage to eat, work, maintain relationships and bathe. Maybe you're all secretly very stinky and skipping out on those showers? (how would I know?) Or maybe I'm just a really slow reader. ( I don't get to read many blogs on a regular basis) I dunno. BUT, I love blogs. I love the treasures I find while digging around. I love getting snippets of others peoples lives and interests. Mostly, I love to discover wonderful illustration and beautiful (yet funky) crafts . So, if I dig up something good, I'll do my best to post it here and share the resource.

My main objective is not to entertain anyone but myself really. However, if you get something out of it, that is super-fantastic and please, by all means, let me know. Mainly, I figured by starting a blog I might be inspired to push it up a notch and crank out more than the doodleheads I seem to draw over and over and over again. More than likely, it will be a place to post all those doodleheads...
