Swan Lake

I decided to take another stab at the whole "Metropolitan" theme from last week's Illustration Friday. Just for fun. So here's she is, the same gal from the illustration below, at the Ballet. Perhaps this is even the same day...after her walk through the city. Of course, it could be the Opera or a theatre show she's attending...but I have a feeling she's there to see the classic "Swan Lake". I remember how much I loved seeing Swan Lake at the Paris Opera House in the late 80's....sitting under that amazing Chagall painting. Oh my, what an overwhelming delight that was.

I almost cried.

And AGAIN, love this one, too!!!

And now, I must steal your brain. And your hand. Give me your creativity! Argh!

Love it! I love the background people, especially.

Wholly Cow, Ward! I just posted this. You're quick. Let's just trade off brains and hands every other week or so. Ok?! I'd like that. Thanks for the awesome compliment.

Your illustrations are so sweet. They remind me of happy times when I was a little girl reading picture books by hoff et al.
I have just discovered your blog and enjoyed it so much I linked to it on my blog, which I probably should have asked about first, now that I think about it.

WOWOWOWOW. Many thanks to ALL of you who've popped on over from BoingBoing.net! What a huge (and happy!) surprise that was.

To briefly answer a few of your questions:
1. I haven't done any children's books. YET. Most all the work I've done on my portfolio site and here has been non-paying work. Most all my paying work is "work for hire" and legally I cannot share it. OR it's other kind of design work I don't necessarily want to show. I do however DREAM of doing children's books and am working on some ideas now. Wish me luck!
2. Do I take students? Wow! What a nice compliment. If you have questions you can always email me and I'll do my best to answer. The more specific your questions the better I'm able to help ( I hope!!) I still feel very much like a student myself though...every day there is so much to learn from other artists, mentors and from making my own mistakes. Here's an excellent thread on Danny Gregory's blog "Everyday Matters" that I think should be required reading for any artist (or human, really) Go Here: http://www.dannygregory.com/weblog/archives/2005_07.html
and read "Slow=Know" on July 7th

Thanks again to all...you really made my day (month, etc)

Wow! Great stuff. I doodle all the time but no where near artistry and imagination. Love the cheerful colors and innocense that come across most of your doodles. You've inspired me. Glad I came across your blog. Perhaps I will commission you one of these day when it's the right project. Until then keep it up :)

I love this illustration. When I saw the post's title, "Swan Lake," and then scrolled down to view the illustration below it, I thought the two went perfectly hand-in-hand. The color of her dress, her blond hair, and her place between her parents were the images that struck me and connected well with its title.
I'm very impressed with this and the other illustrations in your blog :)

I have a feeling this link by BoingBoing to your site is going to open many doors for you. I was recently at Disneyland and the artwork SHAG did for the 50th Anniversary reminds me of your retro work ... but I must say, I like your work better!!!

Holy Wow, 97 comments, your one popular gal!

O come gather round, watch the show
Sweet dancers twirl as they go
Quite grandly we're dressed
As senses be blessed
From 'side the walls of Metro

We'll listen to music so grand
Carressed by the love of the band
When all's said and done
It surely was fun
With pleasure we'll rise, clapping hands

Tis here I conclude this mere prose
As comment to greatness it goes
Sim'lar to the dwelling
Your peices are swelling
To which I shout "Cheerios!!"

Paige you rock! Your illustrations are super-cute! This one is perfect...I feel the same way whenever I see Geisha dance...ofcourse standing up and clapping for that sort of thing is strictly frowned upon here, but inside of me, this is exactly the feeling I am trying so desperately to hide! I know a bunch of people already said this but your drawings are so innocent and cheerful....they remind me of my childhood too, and of the simple pleasures of life! You DEFINATELY need to do children's books! You Go girl! Arigatou!

All my life I have lived in the shadow of my mother who is an extremely talented commercial artist. I can play piano like no tomorrow, but can't draw a stick figure to save my soul, but I would gladly trade talents in a heartbeat. Your work surpasses anything I have ever seen my mother do. It makes me sick, and makes me jealous, and makes me want more all at the same time. I look forward to seeing more in the future. You are amazing.
